Grandparents’ Blessings for Asher: Bubbie

For the last few months, what loomed in my head is what the baby would be like.

I knew the baby would be wholesome in character like Kara and Brian.

I knew he would see life as a responsibility to give something back to the world like Kara and Brian.

I knew he would be an independent thinker to lead a reflective and meaningful life just like Kara and Brian.

Finally would he be as loving? At that moment I felt that his great-grandparents, my mother and father, Gerry, Ruth, and Molly smiling down because they all knew that Kara came into this world as a loving baby and always remained affectionate, kind, and caring.  After Asher was born, I heard Kara crying and when I asked why she said, “I just love him so much.”

From the first time I met Brian he has shown his loving spirit.  Most recently he has exhibited patience and concern to Kara throughout her pregnancy, delivery and in the past few days to his baby.  It was a joy to watch him swaddle his new son in the burrito style and how he helped encouraged Kara with nursing.

The questions I had have been resolved. Asher Henry Schultz has the most wonderful future because he has the most wonderful parents.

Grandparents’ Blessings for Asher: Nana

Asher, you are already a blessing to our family.  May you continue to grow and flourish, to reach for the stars but keep your feet on the ground, to learn from your parents-generosity of spirit, kindness of the heart, and integrity of the soul.  You will also be at  teacher-teaching your parents patience, unconditional love, and a deep respect for humanity. A blessing on your head, Little Asher.

Grandparents’ Blessings for Asher: Papa

Asher, we are so proud to have you in our family.  There is something very special about a grandson, as you will carry on the Schultz name and start a new generation of Schultzes.  Just as we are so proud of your mom and dad, we know we will be proud of you as well, as you grow and mature, and we look forward to all your accomplishments.  We know you will be on the computer in a very short while, and we wonder which musical instrument or instruments you will play.  You come from a very loving and close family–even though we are far away in miles in Atlanta, we always will be thinking about you. And we will share lots of quality time together on Skype, when we visit Seattle and when you visit Atlanta.  Your name “Asher” mean happiness, and we wish you the best of health, and all the happiness in the world in the months and years ahead.

Mom and Dad’s blessing for Asher

Asher, may you live up to your name, living a life dedicated to happiness, wisdom, and greater good.  Be curious.  Choose your path and follow your passions.  May you be an individual, possessing the strength and courage to chart your own course.  But do not forget that you are also a son, a cousin, a nephew, a friend.  And that you are a participant in the broader community and world.  We are excited to watch you grow, and we will always be proud of you.

Love, Mom and Dad.

Introducing Asher

Asher Henry Schultz

His first name will be Asher.  The Biblical Asher is regarded as the example of a virtuous man who with singlemindedness strives only for the general good.  Asher was a son of Jacob and progenitor of the tribe of Asher, known for their wisdom, beauty, and happiness.  In Hebrew, Asher means happy/lucky/blessed.  The “A” in Asher honors Brian’s grandfather Abraham Schultz.  Papa Abe, although a man of few words, earned the respect of many, surprised with his quick observations, and lived up to his name as an “exalted father” both at home and professionally.  He would have been so proud of his great grandson.

His middle name will be Henry, honoring Kara’s grandfather Heinrich Martin.  Despite being dealt a difficult hand by losing his family in the Holocaust and surviving, Zadie appreciated each beautiful day.  He had an insatiable love of life, engaged in conversation with anyone and everyone, and was quite the ladies man.

His Hebrew name will be Asher Yisrael, honoring both Kara’s grandfather Jerry Marcus, whose Hebrew name was Yisrael, and Brian’s grandfather, Yisrael Yaacov Kirshstein, known as Yankel.  Jerry was a kind man.  He was always there for his family, thrived in political conversation, and adored his granddaughters.  Papa Yankel always put family first, quitting school at 15 to take care of his 4 brothers and sisters.  He was kind and patient, never losing his amazing sense of humor.
